Chapter 7 - The True Heir

Forty floors above the street, in the executive boardroom that Julian was never allowed to enter, I stood at the head of a massive mahogany table. The panoramic windows overlooked the Pacific, but no one in the room was looking at the view. All eyes were on me.

"As of this morning, the Julian Sterling experiment is officially terminated," I announced, my voice echoing off the glass walls.

Seated around the table were the twelve members of the Vanguard Holdings Board of Directors—titans of industry, former senators, and ruthless financiers. And sitting to my right was my father, Arthur Vanguard, watching me with a look of immense, unbridled pride.

"The transition was executed flawlessly, Elena," my father said, steepling his fingers. "However, the media is going to have a field day when they realize the 'wunderkind' CEO of The Azure has been ousted. We need a counter-narrative. The markets hate instability."

"There won't be any instability," a deep, smooth voice echoed from the back of the room.

The heavy boardroom doors swung open, and Alexander Vance walked in.

He was breathtakingly sharp. At thirty-four, Alexander was the youngest self-made billionaire in the venture capital sector, a man known for tearing apart failing companies and rebuilding them into global monopolies. He wore a perfectly tailored navy suit, his dark hair neatly swept back, and his piercing gray eyes locked immediately onto mine.

"Mr. Vance," I said, offering a small, professional smile. "You're late."

"Apologies, Madam CEO," Alexander replied, his lips curving into a devastatingly handsome smirk. "I was busy buying out the remaining private shares of Julian’s shell companies. He officially owns nothing but the lint in his pockets."

A murmur of approval went around the table. Alexander took the empty seat to my left. He leaned in, his cologne—a heady mix of cedar and bergamot—drifting toward me.

"It's about time you dropped the dead weight, Elena," Alexander murmured so only I could hear. "I've been waiting for nine years for you to stop playing the dutiful housewife."

I felt a sudden, unfamiliar flutter in my chest, but I kept my face impassive. Alexander and I had crossed paths at exclusive, high-society galas over the years—the kind of galas Julian was never invited to. Alexander was one of the very few outsiders who knew my true identity. He had always looked at me with a mixture of intense respect and something much more dangerous.

"Focus, Alexander," I whispered back. I turned to the board. "Mr. Vance's firm, Apex Capital, will be handling our public relations strategy. We are not just announcing Julian's departure. We are announcing my ascension."

I tapped a button on the remote, and the massive screen behind me illuminated.

"For nine years, I built this company from the shadows," I declared, my voice ringing with absolute authority. "I designed the resorts. I scouted the locations. I managed the secret ledgers. Julian was merely a puppet to keep the press off my family’s back. Now, the puppet is gone. Next week, we will host the annual Vanguard Charity Gala at The Azure. I will make my public debut as the sole owner and CEO. We rebrand immediately."

"And what about Julian's debts?" one of the board members asked.

I smiled. It was cold and utterly merciless. "Activate the debt collection protocols. I want him crushed under the weight of his own arrogance. Take his cars, take his remaining properties, and ensure no reputable company in this country ever hires him again."
