Chapter 17 - The Mistress's Karma

While life at the top of the empire was soaring to unprecedented heights, the wreckage left behind was sinking deeper into the mud.

Across the city, in a cramped, noisy apartment above a 24-hour diner, Chloe Miller stared at her reflection in a cracked bathroom mirror. Her hair, once professionally highlighted and styled, was dry and unkempt. The designer clothes, the expensive cosmetics, and the illusion of high-society luxury were all gone.

After she walked out on Julian the morning he was evicted, she had tried to latch onto another wealthy older man at an exclusive club. But Vanguard Holdings' legal and PR reach was absolute. Within twenty-four hours, a quiet, unwritten directive had circulated among elite circles: Chloe Miller is toxic.

Every door slammed in her face. Investors ghosted her texts. Club promoters barred her entry. Left with no options, she had taken a job as a receptionist at a low-end dental clinic, living paycheck to paycheck in a neighborhood she used to mock.

Her phone buzzed on the counter. A news alert flashed across the screen:

VANGUARD GLOBAL ANNOUNCES $2 BILLION EXPANSION: CEO ELENA VANGUARD SPEAKS ON THE FUTURE OF LUXURY.

Chloe stared at the photograph accompanying the article. Me. Standing tall, draped in designer haute couture, smiling effortlessly beside Alexander Vance, the emerald necklace glowing against my chest.

Tears of pure, unadulterated frustration welled in her eyes. She had traded a real, stable future—even if she thought Julian was the one providing it—for a fleeting moment of cheap thrill and a fake billionaire. She had thought she was stepping into a fairy tale, only to realize she had willingly chained herself to a sinking anchor.

She slammed her fist against the bathroom counter, but there was no one to save her, no one to pity her, and no luxury penthouse to escape to. She was trapped in the very mediocrity she had tried so desperately to claw her way out of.
