Chapter 10 - The Silk of Armor

The grandfather clock in the drawing room struck seven, its chime vibrating softly through the heavy velvet drapes that framed the floor-to-ceiling windows. Outside, rain tapped an erratic rhythm against the glass of the Moretti estate, but inside the private suite, the atmosphere was thick with quiet anticipation.

Lily Carter stood before the full-length mirror, adjusting the cuff of her navy blue silk evening gown. The color was rich, deep like midnight over the Mediterranean, cut with sharp, tailored precision that spoke less of delicate vulnerability and more of deliberate authority. Her right hand, once wrapped in thick gauze, now bore only a slender, flesh-toned compression bandage that ran along the meat of her palm up to the wrist—an elegant piece of understated armor beneath a delicate bracelet of platinum.

A knock sounded against the mahogany door frame. Luca Moretti leaned against the threshold, his broad shoulders filling the entrance. He wore a bespoke tuxedo of raven black, the lapels catching the chandelier's glow. For a fraction of a second, the legendary coldness of his gray eyes fractured, replaced by an arresting intensity that made Lily’s breath catch in her throat.

"Navy blue," he murmured, stepping into the room with that silent, predatory grace she had come to recognize. "I suspected it would suit you, but I confess my imagination was inadequate."

"You said partner, Mr. Moretti," Lily replied, keeping her voice even as she smoothed down the side seam of her dress. "A partner doesn't arrive looking like an interloper. If the syndicate's vultures are circling tonight, I’d rather they wonder who gave me permission to bite."

A slow, genuine smile tugged at Luca’s lips—a rare occurrence that softened the hard angles of his jaw. "They will wonder more than that, Lily. They know Aurelia is rotting in a federal holding cell, and they know the Moretti foundation was scrubbed clean overnight. They expect me to be vulnerable, mourning, or destabilized." He stopped two paces from her, lifting his hand. He hesitated, waiting for her subtle nod of permission, before gently grazing his thumb over the platinum bracelet above her scar. "Instead, I am walking into the Drake Hotel with the woman who dismantled their coup with a silver serving fork."

"Let's make sure they remember it," Lily said, meeting his gaze without flinching. The girl who had scrubbed grease off kitchen counters for minimum wage was no longer here; in her place stood a woman who had bled to expose treason.

Luca offered his arm, the dark fabric of his sleeve pressed against her bare shoulder as she linked her arm through his. "Then let us introduce them to the new order."
