Chapter 29 - The Vault of Secrets

Aurelia stood before Lily in the dim light of the bunker, and for a moment, she looked barely human.

Her tailored clothes were scorched and smeared with soot, her short blonde hair plastered to her skull by rain and sweat. A jagged cut ran down her left cheek where Lily’s copper pan had struck her earlier, encrusted with dark, dried blood. But it was her eyes that chilled Lily to the marrow—they were wide, feverish, and burning with a psychotic, triumphant light that bordered on ecstasy.

In her left hand, Aurelia carried an automatic submachine gun. In her right, she held a heavy, military-grade detonator with a glowing digital countdown display.

*04:15... 04:14... 04:13...*

"Did you really think I'd let them leave?" Aurelia whispered, her voice a raspy, melodious purr that echoed off the cold concrete walls. She didn't raise the submachine gun toward the fleeing servants; she didn't care about them. Her entire, deranged universe was narrowed down to the woman in the ruined emerald gown.

Lily stepped backward toward the vault door, placing her body directly between Aurelia and the secret tunnel where Mrs. Gable and the staff were escaping, her ceramic pistol raised and leveled directly at Aurelia’s chest.

"Put the detonator down, Aurelia," Lily said, her voice dropping into a flat, deadly calm. "Luca has wiped out your mercenaries. Cassian is dead. Julian is dead. You have lost."

"Lost?" Aurelia began to laugh—a soft, bubbling chuckle that escalated into a wild, screeching crescendo. "You stupid, pathetic little baker! You think this was about an estate? You think this was about Luca's boring little empire?"

Aurelia took a slow, theatrical step forward, tapping the side of the glowing detonator with her long, soot-stained fingernail.

"Twenty pounds of C-4 are wired into the structural load-bearing pillars of this entire compound," Aurelia purred, her eyes dancing with madness. "In less than four minutes, the ceilings collapse, burying three hundred years of Moretti history under two million tons of rubble. Luca will be crushed on the first floor. You and I will be crushed down here. We will all burn together, just like we belong."

"You won't blow yourself up," Lily said, her finger steady on the trigger. "You're too vain. You love yourself too much."

"I loved my life!" Aurelia shrieked, the laughter instantly vanishing, replaced by a terrifying, contorted mask of pure rage. "I was a princess! I was born to rule this city! And you... you burned your filthy little hands on sugar and made him look at you like you were holy! You stole my destiny, Lily Carter!"

Aurelia raised the submachine gun.

Before she could pull the trigger, the heavy steel door of the vault’s main corridor was kicked off its hinges with a thunderous crash. Luca burst into the room, covered in soot, blood dripping from a graze on his temple, his assault rifle raised.

"Aurelia!" Luca bellowed, his voice shaking the subterranean room.

Aurelia’s smile returned, wide and grotesque. Without looking at him, she flipped open the clear plastic safety cover on the detonator, her thumb hovering over the bright red toggle switch.

*01:58... 01:57... 01:56...*

"Don't move, Luca darling," Aurelia whispered, her finger touching the trigger of the bomb. "One bullet, and my thumb falls on this switch. We all die right now."

Luca froze, his chest heaving, his dark eyes shifting frantically between the ticking timer and Lily standing ten feet from the blast radius. "Let her go, Aurelia. It's me you hate. Let Lily walk out that tunnel, and you and I will settle this."

"No," Aurelia smiled, her eyes gleaming with absolute triumph. "You're going to watch her die first. Just like I had to watch you put that emerald ring on her hand."

Aurelia shifted the barrel of her submachine gun directly toward Lily’s heart—

Suddenly, the heavy reinforced steel door on the *far western wall* of the vault—a door that Luca had never opened, a door leading to the deep subterranean vaults sealed by his grandfather fifty years ago—groaned loudly.

The heavy hydraulic locks hissed, releasing a cloud of ancient, freezing fog into the room.

Everyone froze. Even Aurelia paused, her thumb hovering millimeters above the detonation switch, her eyes widening in genuine bewilderment as the sealed vault door slowly creaked inward.

Out from the frozen, forgotten shadows stepped a tall, imposing man with snow-white hair, wearing an impeccably tailored black suit of a style from thirty years ago. He leaned on a polished ebony cane with an ivory wolf's head handle. Behind him stood four silent, heavily armed operatives wearing insignia that did not belong to the Morettis, the Drakes, or the Council.

Luca’s breath hitched in his throat, his assault rifle lowering an inch in sheer, unadulterated disbelief.

"Grandfather?" Luca whispered, his voice trembling for the first time in his life. "You... you died in 1995."

The old man smiled—a cold, terrifyingly familiar Moretti smile that sent ice through the veins of everyone in the room. He tapped his cane against the stone floor, his sharp, predatory eyes sweeping across Aurelia, the ticking bomb, and finally locking onto Lily’s scarred right hand.

"The Moretti empire does not die, Luca," the old man’s voice echoed like thunder through the vault. "And neither do its real masters. Now, girl... put down that detonator before I have my men take your hands off at the wrists."

The timer on the bomb flashed red: *00:45... 00:44... 00:43...*

Aurelia’s eyes went completely wild with sudden, manic terror—and her thumb slammed down toward the red switch.
