Chapter 27 - Fractured Alliances

The convoy of six black armored Suburbans tore through the rain-slicked streets of Boston at breakneck speed, sirens screaming, running every red light on the avenue leading into the western suburbs. Inside the lead vehicle, the tension was suffocating.

Luca was on the tactical radio, coordinating with the estate’s garrison. Static and distant gunfire crackled through the speakers.

*"Don Moretti! This is Captain Reyes at the main gate! We are under heavy assault! They hit the transformer substation on Route 9—our primary power is down, and the backup generators were sabotaged from within! They've breached the south courtyard with two armored breaching rams!"*

"Reyes, fall back to the interior perimeter!" Luca ordered, his knuckles white around the radio mic. "Secure the domestic staff in the panic vault beneath the library! Do not engage in open ground! I am six minutes out!"

*"Understood, Boss! We—* [A deafening explosion rocked the transmission, followed by the clatter of automatic rifle fire] *—they have thermal optics! They're in the foyer! Aurelia is with them! She’s torching the—"*

The line went dead, dissolving into high-pitched electronic screeching.

Luca threw the radio against the dashboard, shattering the casing. He closed his eyes for a single second, inhaling deeply, centering his lethal focus. When he opened them, the darkness within was absolute.

"Lily," he said, turning to her. His voice was suddenly gentle, starkly contrasting the violent storm outside. He reached into his coat and produced a spare magazine, pressing it into her hands along with a combat knife housed in a carbon-fiber sheath. "The estate is compromised. When we breach the gates, it will be a free-fire zone. You stay in the vehicle with Marco until I clear the ground floor."

"No, Luca," Lily said, her voice shaking slightly, but her eyes steady and clear. "The staff—Mrs. Gable, the housekeepers, the younger kitchen maids—they don't know the layout of the underground escape tunnels. I do. When you bought this estate, you had me review the historical floor plans to design the industrial pantry. The secret passage behind the cold cellar connects directly to the library panic vault. If the mercenaries breach the vault door, those innocent women are dead."

Luca stared at her, the conflict warring within him. Every instinct he possessed screamed at him to shield her, to lock her in an iron box away from the carnage. But looking into her fierce, determined face, he saw not a fragile maid who needed saving, but a queen who refused to let her people die.

"The tunnel entrance is behind the wine racks in the east wing," Luca said softly, his hand reaching out to cradle her cheek. "If you run into Aurelia..."

"I won't hesitate," Lily replied, her fingers tightening around the combat knife. "Not this time."

The lead Suburban smashed through the wrought-iron gates of the Moretti estate, splintering the heavy black metal into twisted shards. The headlights illuminated a nightmare: the grand driveway was littered with smoking debris, shattered glass, and the bodies of fallen guards. Flashes of orange fire danced in the second-story windows of the main mansion, illuminating the pouring rain with a hellish, flickering glow.

The vehicles skidded to a halt in a tactical semi-circle before the burning portico. Luca kicked his door open before the wheels had even fully stopped.

"Moretti family!" Luca roared into the night, raising his custom assault rifle as enforcers spilled out of the Suburbans like hornets. "Show no mercy!"
