Chapter 31 - The Ghost of the Syndicate

"She stays behind me," Luca snarled, lifting the barrel of his rifle until it was leveled directly at Lorenzo’s chest. "You died in '95, old man. That means everything you built belongs to me. This house, the family, the syndicate, and every breath drawn in this room."
A dry, rustling laugh escaped Lorenzo’s throat. "You wield your authority like a child swinging a stolen sword. Tell me, grandson... do you honestly believe that pathetic girl in the corner with the severed hand managed to breach my subterranean vaults on her own?"
Lorenzo gestured with his cane toward Aurelia, who was whimpering on the floor, her dress soaked in blood, pale and trembling in shock.
"Aurelia was a pawn," Lorenzo continued, pacing with an agonizing slowness. "Her father was a fool who tried to embezzle from the deep vaults two decades ago. I let him think he was clever. I let Aurelia believe she was orchestrating a coup. I needed a catalyst to force you down here, Luca. I needed the vault to be unsealed from both sides."
"Why?" Lily spoke, her voice clear and surprisingly steady despite the trembling in her limbs. She stepped out from behind Luca, placing her uninjured hand firmly against his tensed forearm. Luca tried to pull her back, but she met his gaze with unyielding defiance. She turned to the old patriarch. "You didn't stay hidden in the dark for thirty years just to play mind games with your grandson. What is in this vault that made you risk showing your face?"
Lorenzo’s eyes widened slightly, a flicker of genuine appreciation piercing his haughty demeanor. "Spirited. Just like your grandmother, Elena."
The name struck the room like a physical blow.
Luca frowned, glancing at Lily. "Elena? Elena died in the bakery fire before I was born."
"Elena didn't die in a bakery fire," Lorenzo said softly, the wolf’s head of his cane turning in his grip. "Elena was the master chemist of the Continental Syndicate. The recipes she created did not merely produce confections, Luca. They produced untraceable neurotoxins, biochemical couriers, and antidotes worth empires. She fled my side when she realized I intended to weaponize her work on an international scale."
Lorenzo’s gaze locked onto Lily’s scarred hand. "She ran away to a small, forgotten district in Sicily, took an assumed name, and opened a pastry shop. And when the fire finally caught up to her twenty years ago, she burned her own daughter’s flesh to hide the Syndicate’s genetic brand—the mark of the House of Valenti."
Lily felt the air leave her lungs. Her head spun violently. The burn on her hand—the terrible accident she had always been told happened when she was a toddler, reaching for a boiling sugar cauldron—was not an accident.
"My grandmother..." Lily whispered, her fingers touching the scar tissue through the fabric of her sleeve. "She wasn't just a baker."

"She was the architect of our greatest weapon," Lorenzo said, taking another step forward. "And the formula for the Silent Flame—the poison that Aurelia attempted to lace into that engagement cake—was never written down on paper. Elena encoded it into the Valenti lineage. It is carried in the very marrow of her descendants."
