Chapter 38 - The Unraveling Web

Twenty-four hours later, the ancient city of Rome lay shrouded in a heavy autumn fog.

The Palazzo Colonna, an opulent Renaissance palace in the heart of the historic center, glittered with decadent light. Hundreds of high-ranking diplomats, corrupt judges, shadow financiers, and syndicate leaders arrived in armored limousines, their tuxedos and couture gowns concealing the brutal machinery of the underworld they governed.

This was the Annual High Council Conclave—an event where boundaries were redrawn, debts were settled, and lives were bought and sold.

High above the banquet hall, hidden behind the gilded lattice screens of the private viewing galleries, Luca and Lily watched the guests assemble.

Luca wore an impeccably tailored three-piece charcoal suit, his broad shoulders and commanding presence drawing subtle, wary glances from guards who recognized the Moretti Don. At his side, Lily looked breathtaking. She wore an off-the-shoulder gown of emerald-green velvet that matched the Moretti ring on her finger. Her long hair was pinned up with gold filigree, but she made no effort to conceal the scarred flesh of her right arm.

Instead, the scar had been painted with delicate, intricate gold leaf, turning her wound into a terrifyingly beautiful badge of honor.

"Look at the dessert cart near the dais," Lily whispered, leaning close to Luca under the pretense of sharing a lover's confidence.

Luca followed her gaze.

At the center of the grand dining hall stood a monumental seven-tiered confection—a masterpiece of sugar sculpture designed to represent the Seven Hills of Rome. The sugar paste was pristine white, decorated with spun-sugar flowers.

"The glaze," Lily noted with cold precision. "It has the exact oily sheen of cyanide bonded with wintergreen essence. Lorenzo didn't just bring the poison. He baked it into the royal icing."

"And there he is," Luca murmured, his hand subtly dropping to the concealed Sig Sauer beneath his suit jacket.

Across the grand hall, mingling among the highest Council delegates, stood an elderly gentleman wearing an antique tuxedo, leaning upon an ebony cane with an ivory wolf’s head. He looked every bit the distinguished statesman, laughing warmly with the Grand Chancellor as servers began distributing champagne flutes.

Lorenzo Moretti had walked into the lion's den, and the lions were completely unaware they were about to be slaughtered.

"Wait for my signal," Luca whispered, his jaw clenched. "Marco’s team has severed the perimeter power lines. In two minutes, the lights go out."

"Don't kill him yet," Lily said softly, her dark eyes flashing with lethal clarity. "Expose him first. If he dies in the dark, his myth survives. Break his illusion in front of the entire Council."
