Chapter 16 - The Morning Paper

The morning sun broke through the storm clouds, casting golden shafts of light across the glass towers of downtown Chicago.
Lily sat behind her massive mahogany desk at the headquarters of the Bellardi-Moretti Foundation, a fresh copy of the *Chicago Tribune* spread out before her. The front-page headline screamed in bold, black ink:
**MASSIVE FEDERAL CRACKDOWN ON NORTH SHORE SYNDICATE: KOZLOV NETWORK DISMANTLED IN PRE-DAWN RAIDS.**
Beneath the headline was a photograph of federal agents escorting Viktor Kozlov in handcuffs, followed by a secondary column detailing the total restructuring of the Chicago port docks under the direct oversight of the Moretti maritime logistics division.
"A clean sweep," a smooth voice remarked.
Lily looked up as Luca walked into the office, carrying two ceramic cups of black coffee. He looked rested, sharp in a slate-gray three-piece suit, the dark shadows beneath his eyes completely gone.
"You had the evidence ready before we even stepped into the Drake Hotel last night, didn't you?" Lily asked, raising an eyebrow as she took the offered coffee.
"I had the evidence of his dock smuggling," Luca admitted, taking a seat across from her. "What I didn't have was his direct link to the assassination attempt. When you shot his operative in that kitchen, Marco recovered an encrypted satellite phone from the body. It contained voice memos from Kozlov authorizing the hit and promising Aurelia an extraction team from federal custody."
Lily took a sip of her coffee, savoring the rich warmth. "And Aurelia?"
"Transferred to ADX Florence supermax facility in Colorado at four this morning," Luca said coldly. "She will spend the rest of her natural life in an eight-by-ten concrete box. She will never see the Chicago skyline again."
Lily felt a strange, profound sense of closure wash over her. Just two weeks ago, she had been scrubbing burnt sugar off baking pans, terrified of an eviction notice. Now, the monsters who had ruled her city with fear and arrogance were locked behind iron bars, brought down by a trail of receipts, a burned hand, and unyielding will.
"So," Lily said, leaning back in her leather chair, "what is our next move, Mr. Moretti?"
May you like
Luca smiled, that devastatingly handsome grin that made her heart skip. "Today, Miss Carter, we buy the bakery."
