Chapter 18 - The Unbroken Vow

Three months had passed since the night of the Drake Hotel gala.

The Carter-Moretti Culinary Institute had opened its doors, heralded by the mayor and community leaders as the brightest light in the city's regeneration. Lily divided her time between managing the Foundation's millions and teaching young women the art of pastry—and the art of never bowing their heads to anyone.

Tonight, the Moretti estate was quiet. A soft snow was beginning to fall over the manicured gardens, blanketing the dark earth in pure, pristine white.

In the grand dining room, Luca and Lily sat at a small, intimate table near the roaring stone fireplace. A simple, elegant dinner of handmade pasta and red wine sat between them. There were no armed guards in the room, no files of syndicate treason, no screams of distant sirens. Just the quiet intimacy of two people who had survived a war and found peace in each other's scars.

Luca poured more wine into her glass. "The board unanimously approved the expansion into Detroit today. They didn't even ask for a second vote."

"They know better than to argue with our numbers," Lily smiled, swirling the dark red liquid. "Though I suspect your presence at the head of the table might have discouraged dissent."

"Perhaps," Luca admitted with a faint smirk. Then, his expression softened, the casual humor giving way to that deep, soul-striking sincerity she had learned to treasure.

He reached into his pocket and placed a small, velvet box on the linen tablecloth between them.

Lily’s breath hitched. She looked at the box, then up at Luca’s eyes.

"Luca..."

"Don't worry," he said softly, a tender warmth coloring his voice. "There is no six-thousand-dollar cake tonight. There are no cameras, no rival capos, and no poisonous secrets."

He opened the box. Resting on the black velvet was a breathtaking ring—not a ostentatious diamond meant to display raw wealth, but a flawless sapphire, deep navy blue, flanked by two baguette diamonds on a band of brushed platinum.

"The navy blue," Lily whispered, her hand rising to her lips.

Luca reached across the table, taking her right hand into his, his thumb tracing the pale, smooth scar that ran across her palm.

"I was a man condemned to live in the dark, Lily," Luca said, his voice thick with emotion. "I thought loyalty was something you bought with fear, and I thought love was a weakness enemies exploited. Then you walked into my home with burns on your flesh, and you stood between me and death simply because it was right. You gave me back my soul."

He stood up, walking around the table, and knelt beside her chair on one knee.

"Lily Carter, will you be my wife? Not to complete an alliance. Not to satisfy a family tradition. But because I cannot imagine ruling this world without you at my side."

Tears spilled over Lily's lashes, hot and sweet. She looked at the ring, then at the man who had torn down an entire underworld to keep her safe.

"Yes," she whispered, her voice choking with joy. "Yes, Luca. A thousand times, yes."

He slipped the sapphire onto her finger. It fit perfectly, shimmering in the golden firelight. When he pulled her up into his arms, kissing her with an overwhelming, desperate tenderness, Lily knew that every drop of pain, every burn, and every tear she had ever shed had led her to this exact, unbroken moment.
