Chapter 6 - The Confession in the Foyer

The revelation hit the room like a physical blow.
Several society matrons gasped, clutching their pearls, while two prominent corporate executives near the bar quietly began edging toward the side exit, realizing they were standing in the middle of a live-fire zone.
Vanessa’s knees gave out. She didn't collapse gracefully; she simply slumped against the stone hearth, her manicured fingers clawing desperately at the marble as if trying to anchor herself to the earth.
"It's a conspiracy," Vanessa whispered, her voice cracking into a pathetic, desperate whine. "Luca, you can't believe her. Look at her! She’s been living on the streets, she’s paranoid, she’s—she’s trying to destroy our wedding!"
Luca didn't look at her. He held the heavy leather diary in his hands, his thumbs tracing the embossed initials M.M. stamped on the cover. He didn't need to open it to know what was inside. The weight, the smell of old paper, the familiar leather—it was Michael’s.
He slowly raised his head, turning his gaze back toward Vanessa.
"You told me he embezzled funds," Luca said, his voice terrifyingly quiet.
"He did! The corporate accounts—"
"You told me he fled to Europe because he was a coward who couldn't face an internal audit," Luca continued, stepping closer to her with every word.
"Everyone knew he was skimming from the shipping lanes, Luca! Ask the board! Ask the accountants!" Vanessa shrieked, tears streaming down her face, ruining her expensive makeup and turning her into a caricature of frantic desperation.
"There was no audit," Luca said.
Vanessa froze.
"The internal audit was manufactured three days after Michael stopped answering his phone," Luca said, his gray eyes locking onto hers with a dead, merciless stare. "I signed off on it because you handed me the folders over breakfast while crying on my shoulder about how hard it was to watch my family fall apart."
He reached into the inside pocket of his suit jacket and pulled out the small black USB drive Lily had recovered from the porcelain bride. He held it up between two fingers, letting the crystal chandelier light catch its matte surface.
"And this," Luca whispered, "contains the backup audio recording of your conversation with the corporate attorney on the night my brother died. Discussing how to partition his assets before his body was even cold."
Vanessa stared at the USB drive as if it were a venomous snake. All the color had drained from her face, leaving her looking hollowed out, ancient, and utterly defeated. The mask of high-society perfection had shattered completely, revealing the cold, calculating predator underneath.
"You... you planned this," Vanessa hissed, her voice dropping into a venomous snake-like whisper as she slowly pushed herself up from the floor. "You set me up. You brought that little nobody of a waitress in here to spy on me—"
"Lily is an honest woman," Luca interrupted, his voice booming across the salon with sudden, violent authority. "She works for her living. She does not steal, she does not lie, and she certainly does not murder men in the dark and bury them in timber lots."
He turned to the two guards standing near the entrance.
"Daniel. Marcus."
"Boss," both men barked in unison, stepping forward.
"Take Miss Bellini to the lower security vault. Lock her in the holding cell. Confiscate her phone, her jewelry, and every key she has to this estate. If she so much as breathes too loudly, let me know."
"No! You can't do this to me!" Vanessa screamed as Marcus and Daniel seized her arms, lifting her off her feet as she thrashed and kicked against them like a trapped animal. "I am Vanessa Bellini! My family will destroy you! The board will—"
May you like
"Your family’s assets were frozen by my legal team twenty minutes ago," Luca murmured as she was dragged backward toward the service corridor. "And the board answers to the majority shareholder. Which, as of this morning, is me."
Her desperate screams faded down the hallway, punctuated by the heavy, echoing thud of the security door sealing shut behind her.
