Chapter 17 - The Sweet Taste of Triumph

The neighborhood bakery on 18th Street smelled of roasted espresso, vanilla bean, and fresh sourdough. It was the very bakery where Lily had spent seventy hours a week being verbally abused by Mr. Henderson, the miserly owner who had docked her pay when she burned her hand on the oven rack trying to save his precious wedding tiers.

The bell above the glass door chimed as Lily and Luca stepped inside.

Henderson was behind the counter, counting a stack of grimy one-dollar bills, his balding head glistening with sweat. Without looking up, he barked, "We're closed for lunch! Come back at two!"

"Mr. Henderson," Lily said, her voice clear, calm, and commanding.

The man froze. He looked up, his jaw dropping as he recognized the woman standing before him. She was wearing a tailored ivory trench coat over an emerald-green dress, her hair impeccably styled, her presence commanding the entire room. Beside her stood Luca Moretti, whose reputation alone was enough to make full-grown men soil themselves.

"L-Lily?" Henderson stammered, dropping his cash onto the counter. "What... what are you doing here? I told you, your final paycheck was mailed!"

Luca stepped forward, pulling a manila folder from inside his coat and dropping it onto the glass display case with a heavy *thud*.

"Mr. Henderson," Luca said, his voice icy and lethal. "This is a deed of transfer. As of eleven o'clock this morning, the Bellardi-Moretti Foundation purchased the mortgage on this building, the adjacent lot, and the commercial business entity known as Henderson's Pastries."

Henderson’s eyes bulged. "You... you bought my bakery? You can't do that! I built this place!"

"Actually, Lily built your reputation," Luca replied smoothly. "You stole her recipes, underpaid her labor, and when she suffered a third-degree burn on your faulty equipment, you deducted fifty dollars from her pay for 'spoiled merchandise.'"

Henderson began to tremble, his gaze darting to Luca’s cold, pitiless gray eyes. "Please, Mr. Moretti... I have debts, I have—"

"You have five minutes to take your personal belongings and leave the premises," Lily interrupted, stepping up to the counter. She placed her right hand—the scarred, beautiful hand—flat against the glass. "If you are still in this building in six minutes, Mr. Moretti's legal team will file criminal charges for labor violations, tax fraud, and safety negligence. We already have the audits."

Henderson didn't argue. He grabbed his coat, stuffed his dirty cash into his pocket, and fled out the back door like a terrified rat.

Lily looked around the empty, fragrant bakery. A soft, breathless laugh escaped her lips.

"It's yours," Luca said quietly, standing behind her, his hands resting gently on her shoulders. "Every oven, every table, every grain of sugar. You can tear it down, or you can turn it into an empire."

"I'm going to turn it into a school," Lily said, turning to look into his eyes, her vision blurring with happy tears. "A culinary academy for girls from the shelter. Girls who need a second chance. Girls who know how to fight."

Luca pulled her close, kissing her forehead tenderly. "Whatever you build, Lily, I will stand guard at the door."
