Chapter 20 - The Edge of the Silver Blade

The silver blade sliced through the air with a savage hiss, parting the falling veil of flour between them. Lily did not scream; terror was a luxury she had unlearned long ago in the cold, unforgiving scullery of the Moretti estate. Instead, her muscle memory took over. She brought the heavy oak rolling pin up in a fierce, rising diagonal arc, catching Aurelia’s wrist just below the glove with a dull, sickening crack.
Aurelia shrieked—a high, feral sound of pure indignation—and the cake knife skidded across the marble, clattering into the stainless-steel sink. But the impact did not deter her. Driven by a psychotic frenzy, Aurelia threw her entire weight into Lily, slamming the girl backward against the subway-tiled wall. The air rushed out of Lily’s lungs in a ragged gasp as cold, manicured fingers clamped viciously around her throat.
"You took my ring," Aurelia hissed into Lily’s face, her breath smelling faintly of stale champagne and winter chill, her blue eyes wide, dilated, and swimming in madness. "You took my throne. You made Luca look at me with disgust, you little scullery whore!"
Lily clawed at the woman’s leather-clad wrists, her vision dimming at the edges as her oxygen was cut off. Her burned right hand—the skin scarred and stiffened from the boiling sugar she had taken to save Luca’s life months ago—strained against Aurelia’s grip. But where Aurelia had madness, Lily had endurance. Gritting her teeth, Lily brought her knee up with everything she had, slamming it directly into Aurelia’s diaphragm.
Aurelia wheezed, her grip loosening just enough for Lily to wrench herself free. Lily stumbled forward, coughing violently, her chest heaving as she reached blindly for the edge of the prep table. Her hand closed around the heavy brass handle of a copper sauté pan just as Aurelia lunged again, teeth bared, fingernails curved into claws.
Lily swung with all the fury of a survivor who refused to be put back in the dark.
The pan connected cleanly with Aurelia’s cheekbone. The force of the blow snapped the heiress’s head to the side, sending her sprawling across the slick, flour-covered floorboards with a violent thud. She landed hard, clutching her face, blood trickling from the corner of her split red lips onto the white tiles.
Before Aurelia could rise, the heavy oak doors of the commercial kitchen were blown off their hinges.
The deafening crash echoed like artillery. Luca Moretti burst into the room, a custom Beretta drawn, followed by six armed enforcers in full tactical gear, lasers sweeping the darkened expanse. The moment Luca’s obsidian gaze locked onto Lily’s bruised throat and trembling posture, the air in the room dropped ten degrees. The aristocratic restraint he wore like fine linen vanished, replaced by the apex predator that ruled the Eastern Seaboard.
"Step away from her," Luca’s voice was barely a whisper, yet it froze the blood in the veins of everyone present.
Aurelia looked up from the floor, wiping the blood from her lip with the back of her trembling hand. Instead of fear, she began to laugh—a discordant, shrieking cackle that echoed off the stainless-steel prep tables. "Luca, darling! Look at you, rushing in like a prince. But you're too late. You locked up a shadow, but you forgot who built the cage!"
Luca didn't answer. He lowered his weapon slightly, gesturing with a single finger to his lieutenant, Vincenzo. "Secure the perimeter. Take her to the sub-level interrogation chamber. If she speaks another word without permission, break her jaw."
"Luca, wait," Lily rasped, clutching her throat, her voice raw.
Luca was at her side in an instant, his broad, warm hands catching her shoulders, scanning every inch of her body with frantic, desperate intensity. "Lily. Look at me. Did she cut you? Did she touch you anywhere else?"
"I'm fine," Lily whispered, her hand rising to cover his, feeling the violent tremor running through his muscular frame. "Luca... she didn't come alone. Look at the service entrance. The lock was picked from the inside."

Luca’s eyes hardened into black flint as he turned slowly toward the shattered doorway, his mind instantly grasping the horrific truth: the rot inside the Moretti empire had not died with Aurelia’s first arrest. Someone in this very house had held the door open for a ghost.
