Chapter 24 - Whispers in the High Society

Before the strike team could deploy to the flour mill, Luca’s encrypted sat-phone vibrated violently against the steel table. The display flashed a priority red code: *COUNCIL EMERGENCY BROADCAST.*

Luca tapped the speakerphone. A smooth, aristocratic voice drifted through the bunker—it was Don Giovanni Falcone, the supreme arbiter of the Syndicate’s High Council.

*"Luca,"* Falcone’s voice was measured, dripping with dangerous political calculation. *"Word has reached the five boroughs that you have detained Councilman Cassian without an official tribunal. Furthermore, rumors abound that the Drake family is threatening total war over the treatment of Miss Aurelia Drake."*

"Aurelia Drake attempted to murder my fiancée in my own home three hours ago, Falcone," Luca responded, his tone ice-cold, vibrating with barely contained violence. "Cassian committed treason by financing her escape and harboring foreign mercenaries on our docks. His life is forfeit under the bylaws of 1984."

A heavy sigh came over the line. *"The bylaws require proof presented before the High Council, Don Moretti. Cassian's faction has called for an emergency conclave at the Grand Metropolitan Club in forty-five minutes. If you do not appear with evidence, the Council will declare you rogue, strip your territorial rights, and sanction an open contract on your head."*

"It's a trap to pull you away from the mill," Lily whispered, leaning close to the receiver so Falcone couldn't hear. "They know about the timers. If you go to the Council, South Boston burns. If you go to the mill, the Council strips your power and legitimizes Aurelia’s coup."

Luca looked at Lily, his mind calculating with ruthless speed. He pressed the mute button. "Falcone is a snake who hedges his bets on whoever has the upper hand. If I don't show up, the other four families will mobilize their armies against me before sunrise. I'll be fighting a two-front war."

"Then don't go alone," Lily said, her eyes flashing with sudden inspiration. "And don't send evidence on paper. Vincenzo has the surveillance footage of Aurelia attacking me, correct?"

"Yes," Luca replied. "Every second from the kitchen cameras is backed up on an encrypted hard drive."

"Then we split their game," Lily said, her voice dropping into a register of cold, tactical authority that would have made the oldest mafia matriarchs proud. "Send Marco and the containment team to the mill with hazmat gear and nitrogen fire-suppression equipment—no firearms, only stun gear to prevent a particulate explosion. Meanwhile, you and I walk into the Grand Metropolitan Club. In full formal attire. With the blood still fresh on my neck."

Luca stared at her, stunned by the sheer audacity and brilliance of the gambit. "You want to walk into a room full of bloodthirsty mob bosses looking like a survivor of an assassination attempt?"

"No," Lily said, a dark, triumphant smile touching her lips. "I want to walk into that room looking like the future Mrs. Moretti who survived their best assassin, beat her bloody with a copper pan, and came to collect the heads of the men who funded it. We don't defend ourselves, Luca. We put them on trial."

A slow, terrifying grin spread across Luca’s rugged face—the first real smile he had worn all night. "Vincenzo! Get the tailor out of bed. Bring my black tuxedo and the emerald silk gown we ordered from Milan. We have a party to attend."
