Chapter 5 - The Uninvited Guest

Every head in the East Salon turned toward the foyer.

Standing in the grand entryway, framed by the amber porch lights and the steady sheet of falling rain, was a figure who looked as though she had crawled straight out of a nightmare.

She wore a sodden trench coat that clung to her shivering frame. Her dark hair was plastered against her pale cheeks, and her shoes were caked in thick, wet mud from the estate gardens. But it wasn't her appearance that made the room gasp; it was her face.

It was the face from the USB drive.

Anna Moretti.

Vanessa dropped her champagne glass. The crystal shattered against the marble floor, spraying white wine and shards of glass across the hem of her ivory dress like frozen teardrops.

"What... what is the meaning of this?" Vanessa stammered, taking two involuntary steps backward until her spine hit the carved stone mantelpiece. Her face had gone the color of spoiled milk.

For three seconds, the entire salon was plunged into a dead, suffocating silence. Even the string quartet hidden in the alcove stopped playing mid-note.

Luca did not flinch. He set his champagne glass down on a nearby silver tray with a quiet, deliberate clink. He stepped away from Vanessa, walking slowly across the marble floor until he stood directly in the center of the foyer, blocking the path between his horrified fiancée and the bedraggled woman standing in the doorway.

"Anna," Luca said. His voice was thick with emotion—a complex mixture of shock, grief, and a terrifying, cold fury that made everyone in the room hold their breath. "They said you were dead."

Anna raised her chin, her dark eyes flashing with fierce, unbroken resilience despite the exhaustion etched into every line of her face.

"They lied, Luca," Anna said, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. She pointed a trembling, rain-soaked finger directly at Vanessa Bellini. "And the woman standing behind you is the one who tried to make sure I stayed that way."

Vanessa pushed herself away from the fireplace, her voice rising into a shrill, hysterical shriek that shattered the last remnants of her polished composure.

"She's insane! She's lying! Security!" Vanessa screamed, looking frantically toward the corners of the room where two guards stood frozen, unsure of whose orders to follow. "Throw this tramp out of the house right now! She’s mentally unstable! She’s Michael’s crazy mistress!"

"Quiet, Vanessa," Luca said.

The two words were spoken barely above a whisper, but they carried the weight of an avalanche.

Vanessa stopped dead, her chest heaving beneath her silk gown, her eyes darting wildly between Luca and Anna.

Luca turned back to Anna, taking slow, measured steps toward her until he stood just inches away. He looked down at her sodden coat, then up at her face.

"Where is my brother, Anna?" Luca asked, his voice trembling for the first time that evening.

Anna reached into the deep pocket of her trench coat. For a terrifying second, the guards near the door instinctively reached for their holsters, but Anna merely pulled out a heavy, water-resistant leather diary and held it out toward him.

"He’s in the ground, Luca," Anna whispered, tears finally spilling over her lashes and cutting clean tracks through the mud on her cheeks. "Buried in the unmarked timber lot behind the old Moretti brickworks on the south side. And Vanessa has the deed to the property in her safe upstairs."
