Chapter 35 - The Serpent in the Parlor

The explosion shook the earth beneath them, a muffled, colossal shockwave that rattled the elevator cables and sent dust raining down from the shaft. The reinforced subterranean blast doors absorbed the brunt of the detonation, but the shudder that passed through Villa Moretti signaled that the deep vaults—and whatever secrets Lorenzo had spent thirty years guarding—were now partially buried under tons of collapsed bedrock.
The lift groaned as it crawled upward, finally shuddering to a halt at the ground-floor receiving parlor.
The doors parted. Luca stepped out first, rifle raised, his body rigid with adrenaline.
The main foyer of Villa Moretti was silent, but it was the silence of a slaughterhouse. Bodies of Drake mercenaries lay scattered across the marble floor, neutralized with clinical efficiency by Luca’s personal guard, who were now securing the entryways. The glass chandeliers were shattered, their crystal pendants crunching beneath Luca’s heavy combat boots.
"Boss!" Marco, Luca’s chief of tactical security, rushed forward from the grand staircase, his flak jacket scarred with shrapnel. "We secured the perimeter. The Drake forces have retreated. But we caught chatter on encrypted frequencies—there's an unidentified unit retreating toward the southern cliffside docks."
"Lorenzo," Luca said through gritted teeth, wiping blood and plaster dust from his forehead. "He had a secondary escape route."
Lily leaned against the grand piano in the parlor, her legs finally trembling as the shock set in. Her dress was torn, stained with soot and blood, and her right hand burned with an agonizing, rhythmic pulse. She looked down at the emerald ring on her left hand. It was smeared with ash, but underneath, the green gem shone with absolute, indestructible clarity.
"He's not leaving the island, Luca," Lily whispered, her voice rough.
Luca turned to her immediately, the murderous ice in his eyes melting away into deep, desperate concern. He closed the distance between them, tossing his weapon aside to cup her face with his calloused, dust-covered hands. "Are you hurt? Did any of the blast hit you?"
"I'm fine," she insisted, leaning into his touch despite the chaos around them. "Listen to me. When your grandfather spoke... he knew exactly what was in the bakery twenty years ago. He didn't just find me because of the poisoned cake. He knew where my grandmother was all along."
Luca’s expression darkened. "What are you saying?"
"He let my mother and grandmother burn," Lily said, her eyes burning with an ancient, inherited rage. "He orchestrated the fire in Palermo. He wanted to force the heirs of the Valenti bloodline back into his control, but my mother hid me in the foster system before she died."

Luca’s jaw set into iron. He pulled her against his chest, wrapping his arms around her with a fierce, possessive intensity. "Then he won't make it to those docks alive."
