Chapter 46 - Beneath the Gilded Mask

They breached the perimeter from the rear drainage canal, wading through knee-deep water beneath the rusted iron sluice gates. Alessandro moved with terrifying lethality, eliminating the two exterior sentries with silenced headshots before their bodies could splash into the current.

Lily followed closely behind, carrying the retrofitted canisters in a canvas satchel across her chest.

They reached the service door of the main chemical mixing hall. Inside, the roar of massive hydraulic pumps vibrated through the concrete floor. The air was thick with the sharp, medicinal stench of raw aconite—a smell Lily recognized instantly from her grandmother’s warnings. It was cold, metallic, and carried the phantom sweetness of rotting almonds.

Through the wired glass window of the inner door, Lily saw him: Dr. Victor Vance, a gaunt, bald man in a rubberized apron, carefully calibrating a digital injection pump connected directly to the primary municipal water main. Two fifty-gallon stainless steel drums stood beside him, both stenciled with the ouroboros sigil of the Silent Flame.

Standing on the raised observation deck above the vats was Don Lorenzo Moretti.

Lorenzo had discarded his formal tuxedo jacket, wearing only a tailored silk waistcoat and his pristine white shirt. He rested his weight on his wolf-headed cane, watching the chemist work with the cold detachment of a farmer supervising a slaughter.

"How much longer, Victor?" Lorenzo’s voice boomed down from the catwalk, amplified by the industrial acoustics of the room.

"Fifteen minutes, Don Lorenzo," Vance replied without looking up. "The pressure in the primary line is stabilizing. Once I open the secondary feed, the toxin will disperse through the entire southwestern grid within three minutes. No filtration system in Italy can detect it at this dilution."

"A masterpiece," Lorenzo said softly. "The Council delegates thought they could vote to divide my shipping routes. They thought Alessandro could challenge my authority with his progressive notions. By sunrise, the world will remember who built this syndicate."

"You didn't build it, Lorenzo," a clear, steady voice echoed through the hall.

The chemist froze.

Lorenzo turned slowly on the catwalk, his storm-grey eyes narrowing as he looked down at the entrance.

Lily stood in the center of the mixing floor, her head held high, completely unmasked.
