Chapter 28 - The Siege of Villa Moretti

The smell of cordite, burning oak, and ozone filled the air as Luca led the frontal assault through the shattered main entrance of the manor. The great foyer—once a monument to marble opulence and quiet luxury—was a war zone. The grand crystal chandelier hung crookedly from the ceiling, three-quarters of its prisms shattered across the bloodstained floorboards.

Mercenaries in unmarked black tactical gear fired from behind the sweeping marble staircases. Luca moved with terrifying, lethal efficiency. He fired in controlled, three-round bursts, dropping two gunmen on the landing before diving behind an overturned marble console table.

"Clear the west wing!" Luca bellowed over the deafening roar of automatic weapons. "Vincenzo, take three men and flank the ballroom! Push them toward the courtyard!"

Meanwhile, Lily had slipped through the service entrance on the eastern flank of the estate. The rain drenched her emerald silk gown, turning the fabric heavy and clinging to her skin, but she paid it no mind. She kicked off her high heels, moving silently on bare feet across the cold flagstones of the kitchen courtyard.

She entered through the shattered kitchen pantry—the very room where Aurelia had ambushed her hours before. The smell of smoke was thick here, but the fires had not yet consumed the stone foundations. Lily moved like a ghost through the shadowy corridors, her heart hammering against her ribs, her grip tight on the ceramic pistol Luca had given her.

Reaching the concealed doorway behind the heavy oak paneling of the old scullery, she punched the override code into the mechanical tumbler. The hidden panel clicked and slid open with a soft groan of unoiled hinges, revealing the narrow stone staircase leading downward into the subterranean escape tunnels.

Lily switched on a small tactical penlight, descending into the dark.

The tunnel was damp, the air thick with the smell of mold and ancient earth. Above her, the muffled thud of grenade detonations and rifle fire vibrated through the limestone ceiling, showering her hair with dust. She moved quickly, her bare feet silent on the cold stone, navigating the twists and turns until she reached the heavy reinforced door that led into the library's underground panic vault.

Through the heavy steel, she could hear weeping.

Lily tapped the intercom button, speaking in a firm, urgent whisper. "Mrs. Gable! It’s Lily. Open the access hatch."

A sharp gasp came from the other side. A small sliding viewing port opened, revealing the terrified, tear-streaked face of the elderly head housekeeper. "Miss Lily! Merciful God, you're alive!"

"Open the door, quickly," Lily urged. "Luca is clearing the main house, but we need to evacuate you through the eastern tunnel to the perimeter fence."

The heavy vault bolts clunked open. Lily stepped inside to find seven domestic staff members—maids, kitchen assistants, and the elderly butler—huddled together in terror. Mrs. Gable threw her arms around Lily, trembling violently.

"They're upstairs, child," Mrs. Gable sobbed. "That madwoman... Aurelia... she was screaming your name like a banshee. She had cans of accelerant... she said she was going to burn the house until nothing of you remained!"

"She won't get the chance," Lily said soothingly, her voice filled with quiet, unbreakable authority. "Listen to me, all of you. Take the tunnel straight for two hundred yards. At the fork, turn left. It will bring you out inside the old gardener's greenhouse outside the security perimeter. Marco has men stationed there. Run, and don't look back."

The staff nodded frantically, filing out into the secret passage one by one. But just as the last young maid crossed the threshold, a heavy, metallic thump echoed from the ceiling directly above the vault.

Lily looked up. The emergency air intake vent was vibrating.

A second later, the heavy iron vent cover was kicked inward, crashing onto the concrete floor with a deafening clang. And dropping lightly through the opening, like a predatory cat descending from the rafters, was Aurelia.
