Chapter 4 - The Comedy of the Living Room

Downstairs in the East Salon, the atmosphere was a masterclass in high-society hypocrisy.

The shattered remnants of the engagement dinner had been swept away, replaced by trays of artisan cheeses, smoked salmon, and crystal flutes of vintage champagne circulating on silver trays. The crystal chandeliers cast a brilliant, sparkling light over the gathered elite of Chicago—politicians, CEOs, real estate moguls, and socialites who traded favors like baseball cards.

Vanessa Bellini stood near the marble fireplace, holding a glass of champagne in her left hand while laughing lightly at something said by a city councilman. Dressed in an ivory silk gown that cost more than a small car, she looked every inch the radiant, untouchable bride-to-be. The incident with the cake had been neatly brushed aside as a minor catering mishap, a silly domestic hiccup involving a clumsy waitress who didn't know how to handle a hot baking sheet.

As Luca entered the salon with Lily walking a respectful two paces behind him, the hum of conversation dipped slightly before instantly resuming with redoubled energy.

Vanessa’s eyes locked onto Luca immediately. A triumphant, slightly possessive smile curved her painted lips as she excused herself from the councilman and glided across the room toward him.

"Darling," Vanessa purred, reaching out to stroke the lapel of his black suit jacket. "I was wondering where you disappeared to. The caterers are asking if we should cut a backup cake from the freezer, or if we should just skip straight to the speeches."

Luca looked down at her. His expression was a masterpiece of controlled indifference—calm, attentive, and utterly unreadable.

"Let them skip the cake, Vanessa," Luca said smoothly. "Our guests have had enough excitement for one evening."

Vanessa pouted playfully, letting her fingers trail down his arm. "Oh, don't be so dramatic about a little melted frosting. It was just an accident. Though I really do think you should speak to poor Lily about her clumsiness. Burning her hand right before our engagement party? It’s almost as if she was trying to ruin the photos."

Lily, standing quietly just over Luca’s shoulder, felt her stomach churn. The sheer audacity of the woman—standing two feet away from the man whose brother she had likely destroyed, smiling while discussing a burn she had intentionally inflicted—made Lily’s fingers twitch with a sudden, violent urge to strike her.

Instead, Luca simply turned his head slightly, acknowledging Lily with a brief glance before looking back down at his fiancée.

"Lily has been dealt with," Luca said evenly. "She won't be a bother to us again tonight."

"Good," Vanessa sighed with satisfaction, taking a delicate sip of her champagne. "Some people simply don't belong in a house like this. They lack the refinement. They crack under pressure."

"Indeed," Luca agreed, his voice dropping into a register so low and smooth that only Vanessa could hear it. "Some people crack under pressure. And others... others build entire empires on foundations of sand, believing the tide will never come in."

Vanessa paused, her champagne glass hovering an inch from her lips. A brief flicker of unease crossed her eyes—a tiny, invisible shadow that vanished as quickly as it appeared.

"What do you mean by that, darling?" she asked, her smile tightening just a fraction.

May you like

"Nothing, my love," Luca replied, reaching out to take a fresh flute of champagne from a passing tray. "Just reflecting on how fragile happiness can be when it isn't built on truth."

Before Vanessa could probe further, the massive mahogany doors at the front of the mansion swung open with a resounding bang that rattled the crystal stemware across the room.
