Chapter 41 - Cold Steel in the Dark

The entrance to the service passage was concealed behind a floor-to-ceiling fresco depicting the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian. To an untrained eye, the painted plaster was solid masonry, but Lily had spent days memorizing the architectural blueprints preserved in the old Valenti diaries. Her fingers flew across the perimeter of the painted martyr's ribcage, finding the slight imperfection where the lime wash had dried over a brass pressure lever.

She pressed down with the heel of her scarred hand. The pain was an old companion now, dull and grounding. With a muffled groan of counterbalance weights, a narrow vertical seam opened in the wall, exhaling the damp, mossy breath of subterranean Rome.

"Inside, now," Alessandro ordered, firing two suppressing rounds down the corridor behind them. The concussive blasts echoed like thunder in the enclosed hallway.

A bullet clipped the edge of the stone doorframe, showering Lily’s hair with white pulverized marble. She slipped sideways into the gap, Alessandro tumbling in right behind her. He slammed his shoulder into the counterweight, and the fresco slid shut with a heavy, sealed thud.

Instantly, the deafening war upstairs was reduced to a subterranean vibration—a low, rhythmic rumble that shook the damp air around them.

They were in total darkness.

"Alessandro?" Lily breathed, her back pressed against slimy tufa stone.

"Here," his voice came from inches away. A soft click followed, and the slender beam of a tactical penlight illuminated his features. Blood trickled from a graze across his left temple, cutting a bright crimson path through the grime on his jaw, but his gaze was entirely fixed on her. "Are you hit?"

"No. Just dust." She wiped her face with the back of her sleeve, then pulled the linen-wrapped bundle from her tunic. The sweet, cloying aroma of almond paste and bitter vanilla escaped into the cold vault air. "The sample is intact."

"Good. Because upstairs is a graveyard," Alessandro said grimly, inspecting the chamber. The passage sloped sharply downward, a wet Roman aqueduct tunnel converted into a Victorian escape hatch. Water dripped from the ceiling, gathering in shallow gutters beside ancient brickwork. "Lorenzo intentionally invited the most conservative delegates—the ones who favored diplomatic neutrality. By slaughtering them tonight, he creates a power vacuum only his hardline faction can fill. He will blame the Drake syndicate. He will blame me."

"And what will he say about me?" Lily asked quietly, walking carefully down the slick incline.

Alessandro stepped beside her, his hand lightly resting on the small of her back to steady her on the wet stone. "He will tell the Families that you were an undercover operative sent to poison the communion of peace. He will make you the monster, Lily. That is how Lorenzo operates. He turns the truth inside out until his enemies choke on it."

"He underestimated my grandmother thirty years ago, and he is underestimating me tonight," Lily said, her voice hard. "He thought burning my hand would destroy my ability to detect his craft. But sugar doesn't lie, Alessandro. The Silent Flame neurotoxin isn't just an untraceable poison; it carries a signature. It requires an oil-soluble stabilizer made from cold-pressed mountain aconite. Only one chemist in Europe produces that grade of aconite."

Alessandro halted in the narrow tunnel, turning the penlight toward her face. "Dr. Victor Vance. The chemist who disappeared from Vienna twelve years ago."

"My grandmother wrote his name in her ledger," Lily replied, meeting his gaze evenly. "She wrote that Vance worked out of an old botanical warehouse near the docks of Ostia. If Lorenzo is deploying this poison tonight, Vance is in Rome. And if we find Vance, we don't just prove the cake was poisoned—we dismantle Lorenzo’s entire supply chain."

Ahead of them, the tunnel widened into an arched intersection. From the gloom of the left corridor, the unmistakable sound of wet rubber soles slapping against stone echoed toward them.

"Flashlights," Alessandro whispered, instantly killing his penlight. He pushed Lily behind an ancient buttress and drew his combat blade from his boot. "They know the tunnels."
