Chapter 36 - Whispers in the Catacombs

The storm outside Villa Moretti intensified, torrential rain lashing against the broken French windows of the grand study. Emergency floodlights cast stark, geometric shadows across the room where Luca had laid out topographical maps of the Sicilian coastline.

Lily sat by the fireplace, allowing the estate’s physician to clean and re-bandage her burned hand. The doctor worked in tense silence, intimidated by the deadly atmosphere of the room. When he finished, Luca dismissed him with a sharp nod.

"You should be resting," Luca said softly, kneeling before Lily’s chair. He took her bandaged right hand gently, holding it as if it were made of spun glass, and pressed a tender kiss to the scarred skin above the wrapping. "You risked everything today, Lily. Again. For me."

"I didn't do it just for you," Lily whispered, her fingers curling into his dark hair. "I did it for us. And for my grandmother. All my life, I thought I was nobody—just a girl with ruined skin who belonged in the heat of a kitchen, invisible to the world. But my scars... they were a shield. My mother gave them to me to protect me from monsters like Lorenzo."

"Lorenzo doesn't know the monster he just awakened," Luca replied, his storm-grey eyes flashing with lethal intent. "He thought he could return from the grave and treat my family as his chessboard. He underestimates what I am willing to burn to keep you safe."

A soft knock interrupted them. Marco stepped into the study, holding a waterlogged leather journal and an encrypted satellite transceiver.

"We swept the secondary tunnel entrance near the cliffs," Marco reported. "Don Lorenzo’s operatives evacuated on a high-speed submersible before our gunboats could intercept. But they left this behind in their staging cache."

Marco placed the journal on the desk. Its leather cover was embossed with a silver wolf and a blooming nightshade—the combined crest of the Moretti and Valenti houses.

Lily stood up slowly, drawn to the book by an irresistible pull. She reached out and opened the brittle, aged parchment pages.

Inside, written in delicate, precise cursive handwriting that Lily recognized with an electric shock of grief and familiarity, were hundreds of formulas. Pastry recipes—almond paste, candied bergamot, royal icing—interleaved with meticulous notes on toxic alkaloids, organic binders, and cellular preservation.

It was her grandmother Elena’s personal grimoire.

And taped inside the back cover was an old, sepia-toned photograph of three young men standing together in front of the grand gates of Villa Moretti fifty years ago.

One was Lorenzo Moretti. The second was a man whose features matched the Drake patriarch.

And the third was an older man with piercing dark eyes, wearing the uniform of a high-ranking judge of the European High Court—the secret head of the Continental Council.
