Chapter 39 - The Master of the Silent Flame

The Grand Chancellor stepped up to the dais, tapping his crystal glass with a silver fork to command silence. The chatter in the grand ballroom died down, leaving only the soft hum of the ventilation and the distant murmur of the Roman rain.

"Distinguished colleagues, partners, and guardians of our ancient order," the Chancellor began, smiling broadly. "Tonight, we celebrate another year of prosperity. And to honor the eternal alliance of our families, our esteemed guest—a ghost returned from history—has gifted us this magnificent confection."

The Chancellor gestured toward Lorenzo, who bowed gracefully from his place of honor beside the dais, his ivory-headed cane gleaming under the grand chandeliers.

"A toast to the rebirth of the old ways," Lorenzo said, his voice carrying effortlessly across the room, rich and hypnotic. "Let us taste the sweetness of our shared future."

The servers stepped forward, their silver knives poised over the monumental cake.

"Stop!"

The single word cut through the grand hall like a whip.

Every head turned. From the grand marble staircase, Luca Moretti descended, his gaze locked onto his grandfather with predatory focus. And at his side, her head held high, walked Lily, her emerald dress rustling against the marble steps, her gold-leafed scar catching the chandelier light like molten fire.

Whispers of shock and confusion erupted across the room.

"Luca Moretti?" the Chancellor stammered, frowning. "What is the meaning of this interruption?"

"The meaning is treason, Chancellor," Luca declared, his voice booming with absolute authority as he reached the center floor, his men seamlessly taking up defensive positions at every exit. "The man standing beside you is not your guest of honor. He is your executioner."

Lorenzo did not panic. His smile merely hardened into an icy, amused grimace. "Luca... you always did have a dramatic flair. Are you so insecure in your leadership that you must disrupt a sacred conclave?"

"Tell them what is in the icing, Grandfather," Lily stepped forward, her voice cutting through the rising murmurs with surgical sharpness. "Tell them about the Silent Flame. Tell them how you poisoned the Valenti family thirty years ago to steal their craft, and how you laced that cake with enough neurotoxin to stop the hearts of every delegate in this room within sixty seconds of digestion."

The room went dead silent. Delegates exchanged horrified, suspicious glances. Several guards drew their sidearms, unsure of where to aim.

Lorenzo let out a slow, mocking chuckle. "A lovely story from a common bakery maid. Who among you would believe the hysterical ravings of an uneducated kitchen girl over the word of a founder?"

Lily walked directly toward the dais, utterly fearless. She stopped before the towering cake, picked up a heavy silver serving knife, and carved a thick wedge of the sugar sculpture.

She turned to face the entire Council.

"A pastry chef never serves what they cannot eat," Lily said calmly, holding up the plate. She turned to Lorenzo, extending the cake toward him. "If this confection is a gift of honor, Don Lorenzo... take a bite. Prove to the Council that their founder does not feed them death."

The ballroom fell into a terrifying, suffocating silence.

All eyes converged on Lorenzo Moretti.

The old patriarch’s smile vanished completely. His storm-grey eyes locked onto Lily’s with an intensity of pure, venomous hatred. His hand tightened around the ivory wolf’s head of his cane until the wood groaned under the pressure.

He did not reach for the cake.

Instead, Lorenzo slowly twisted the ivory wolf’s head ninety degrees to the left.

A sharp, metallic click echoed through the ballroom.

"You really are Elena's granddaughter," Lorenzo whispered, his voice deadly and quiet. "Clever. Defiant. And utterly doomed."

Suddenly, the massive glass dome of the Palazzo Colonna shattered inward in a shower of deadly crystal shards, as black-clad figures on tactical repelling ropes dropped from the stormy Roman sky—and the ballroom was plunged into pitch-black darkness.
