Chapter 30 - The Severed Thread

The red light on the detonator flared, casting a crimson hue across Aurelia’s twisted, triumphant face. Her thumb drove downward with hysterical force, intending to obliterate the subterranean foundations of Villa Moretti and drag everyone down into a tomb of pulverized granite and shattered steel.

A deafening crack tore through the vault—not the roar of semtex, but the supersonic snap of a high-caliber round fitted with an experimental suppressor.

Aurelia’s hand jerked back violently. A spray of dark arterial blood hit the cold stone floor before the sound even registered in her brain. Her severed thumb and the plastic casing of the detonator bounced against the tiles, spinning across the blood-slicked flagstones until they collided with the polished leather shoe of Luca’s grandfather.

Aurelia dropped to her knees, clutching her ruined wrist with an ear-piercing shriek of agony. The submachine gun clattered uselessly from her fingers.

Standing behind the ancient patriarch, the operative on the far left smoothly lowered a compact, matte-black bullpup rifle. The barrel was smoking faintly in the subterranean chill.

"Careless, young lady," the old man murmured, his gravelly voice smooth as polished obsidian. He did not even flinch as he tapped his ebony cane against the granite floor. "Desperation is the hallmark of an amateur. A true Moretti never leaves their life in the hands of a five-second countdown."

Luca did not lower his weapon. His knuckles were bone-white against the rifle’s receiver, his gaze darting between the bleeding, sobbing Aurelia, his long-dead grandfather, and Lily. With a swift, instinctive step, Luca shifted his broad frame directly in front of Lily, his broad shoulders shielding her small frame from the unfamiliar operatives.

"Don Lorenzo," Luca said, his voice flat, dangerously cold, vibrating with pure adrenaline. "My father buried you thirty years ago in the family mausoleum at San Pietro. We laid an empty casket in the earth."

Lorenzo Moretti smiled, exposing teeth that were remarkably sharp and straight despite his advanced years. His eyes—the exact shade of storm-grey as Luca’s—swept over the room, dismissing Aurelia’s groaning figure on the floor as if she were nothing more than discarded trash.

"Your father was a bureaucrat, Luca. A caretaker who mistook ledgers and balance sheets for power," Lorenzo replied, stepping deeper into the vault. The four operatives fanned out behind him, moving with the terrifying, silent precision of apex predators. "When the old world collapsed in '95, the Syndicate required a ghost to shepherd its true treasures. The Council believed I was dust. The Drakes believed the Moretti fangs had been pulled. But you... you have proven to be far more troublesome than your father ever was."

Lorenzo stopped barely three paces away. His cold, assessing gaze drifted past Luca’s shoulder, settling with laser-like intensity upon Lily.

Lily felt a chill run down her spine, colder than the freezing fog drifting from the subterranean tunnel. Her scarred right hand throbbed beneath the bandage, the burn marks tingling with an uncanny, phantom heat. The patriarch was not looking at Luca's rifle. He was not looking at the billions of dollars worth of gold and bonds lining the vault walls.

He was staring directly at the crude, circular scar etched across the flesh of her wrist.

"Move away from her, Luca," Lorenzo commanded softly. "Before you shed blood you cannot afford to replace."
