Chapter 25 - The Scent of Bitter Almonds

The Grand Metropolitan Club was an opulent bastion of dark mahogany, stained glass, and gold leaf, tucked discreetly behind the brownstones of Beacon Hill. For over a century, it had served as the neutral ground where the Eastern Seaboard’s underworld titans brokered treaties, divided territories, and ordered executions over vintage scotch and Cuban cigars.
Tonight, the grand dining hall was tense as a funeral. Forty high-ranking capos, underbosses, and council elders sat along the massive banquet table under the glow of crystal chandeliers. At the head of the table sat Don Giovanni Falcone, his silver-topped cane resting between his knees, his expression inscrutable.
The heavy oak double doors swung open with a dramatic reverberation.
Every conversation died instantly. Every hand subtly shifted beneath tailored coats toward hidden holsters.
Luca Moretti strode into the hall, looking every inch the undisputed king of the underworld in a bespoke black tuxedo with satin lapels. But it was not Luca who stole the breath from the room—it was the woman on his arm.
Lily Carter glided into the den of wolves wearing an emerald-green silk gown that clung to her silhouette with regal elegance, the rich color setting off her porcelain skin and striking amber eyes. Her dark hair was swept up in an intricate chignon, leaving her pale neck completely exposed. And there, stark and undeniable against her throat, were the dark, purpling finger marks of an attempted strangulation.
Around her right wrist, she wore no jewelry—only the faint, honorable silver scars of the burn she had suffered saving Luca’s life. She walked with her head held high, her spine straight as a blade, meeting the predatory stares of forty hardened killers without blinking.
"Don Moretti," Falcone said slowly, leaning forward, his eyes lingering on the bruises on Lily’s neck. "You honor us with your presence. And with the presence of your... charming fiancée."
"I did not come to honor you, Falcone," Luca said, his voice ringing through the cavernous hall like a death knell as he escorted Lily to the vacant chairs at the foot of the table. "I came to present the Council with a choice."
A capo from the Drake-allied faction scoffed loudly. "You come here making demands after kidnapping Councilman Cassian? You've violated the code, Moretti! You're letting your emotions for a lowborn baker drag this syndicate into ruin!"
Lily did not wait for Luca to speak. She took a step forward, resting her scarred right hand flat against the polished mahogany table, leaning in slightly toward the insolent capo.
"My lowborn hands," Lily said, her voice clear, melodious, and sharp as broken glass, "pulled twenty grams of cyanide out of your Don’s cake four months ago. And tonight, these same hands cracked the cheekbone of Aurelia Drake when she broke into our home like a common gutter rat."
A collective murmur rippled through the room.
Lily gestured toward Vincenzo, who stepped forward and tossed a heavy silver drive onto the table before Falcone. "On that drive is the digital telemetry from the maximum-security federal transport in Colorado, showing three million dollars wired from Cassian's offshore accounts to bribe the marshals. Next to it are the logs from the estate’s security grid, unlocked with Cassian's master key. And finally, the footage of Aurelia attempting to slit my throat."
Lily fixed Falcone with an unyielding, fearless gaze. "Cassian didn't just betray Luca. He broke the sacred neutrality of the Council by bringing the Drake syndicate's foreign mercenaries onto our docks. If you sanction his treason, Falcone, you are telling every soldier in this city that the High Council has no honor left."
Falcone picked up the drive, turning it over in his weathered hands. The room held its breath. The capos looked between Falcone, Luca’s hand resting casually near his jacket, and the magnificent, unbowed woman standing beside him.
Before Falcone could rule, the large double doors at the service entrance burst open. A young waiter rushed in, his face white as chalk, carrying a covered silver cloche. He tripped, nearly falling at Falcone’s feet.
"Don Falcone! Forgive me! A package just arrived by private courier... marked urgent for Don Moretti and Miss Carter!"
Luca’s hand instantly vanished beneath his jacket, his gun clearing the leather holster in a blur. "Nobody touch it!"
Lily stepped closer, her keen senses flaring. She stopped three feet from the silver cloche. Her nostrils flared, catching a faint, distinct aroma leaking through the seams of the metal cover.
It was not the scent of pastry. It was the scent of bitter almonds—heavy, pungent, and chemically concentrated.

"Prussic acid," Lily gasped, grabbing Luca’s arm and dragging him backward. "Move back! It's a pressurized vapor trap!"
