Chapter 49 - The Final Gambit

The rain had finally stopped as the first pale slivers of dawn broke over the horizon, painting the coastal ruins of Ostia in shades of cold silver and amber. Outside the pumping station, the hum of approaching engines broke the morning silence.

Six black sedans—not Lorenzo’s, but bearing the distinct crests of the surviving neutral Families—pulled into the courtyard, their headlights illuminating the shattered entrance. The judgment of the underworld had arrived to collect their former master.

Alessandro lowered his weapon, stepping back to let the enforcers handle the broken patriarch. He turned to Lily, reaching out to gently touch the edge of her bandaged right hand.

"It's over," he murmured, his gaze softer than she had ever seen it. "Elena's debt is paid. The bakery is yours. The city is free of his poison."

Lily looked down at her hand, feeling the quiet, steady beat of her own heart. For the first time in her life, the ghost of the fire seemed distant, powerless against the morning light.

"Not quite," she said softly, looking up at him with a faint, weary smile. "A bakery requires flour, sugar... and peace. We only have the first two."

Suddenly, Lorenzo’s raspy, dying laugh echoed from the catwalk behind them.

Alessandro spun around, his hand instinctively going back to his holster.

Lorenzo was lying on his back, his face smeared with soot and blood, but a hideous, triumphant grin stretched across his cracked lips. In his bloodied left hand, he held a small, black radio detonator—not linked to the pumping station, but to a completely different frequency.

"You fools..." Lorenzo wheezed, coughing up dark blood. "You thought... you thought Vance's ledger contained all my shipments?"

Lily’s heart seized. "What did you do, Lorenzo?"

"The cake at the Palazzo..." Lorenzo whispered, his thumb hovering over the glowing red switch of the remote. "You proved it was poisoned. You took the sample... but did you ask... where the second half of that cake was delivered?"

Alessandro stepped forward, aiming his weapon, his voice dropping into panic: "Where is it?!"

"To the Vatican orphanage in Trastevere," Lorenzo whispered, his eyes rolling back in pure madness. "The morning breakfast delivery... fifty children... eating Elena's recipe right now..."

Before Alessandro could pull the trigger, Lorenzo pressed his thumb hard against the detonator.

A shrill, unbroken electronic tone shrieked through the radio—and sixty miles away, deep in the heart of Rome, the morning bells of Trastevere began to chime.
