Chapter 100

Chapter 100: The Phantom Document
The anniversary month brought another unexpected ripple from the past. A legal firm in Richmond, while digitizing century-old probate records from defunct commercial enterprises, found an unrecorded deed of land under the name of Robert Davis Personal Holdings, dated 1992.
It was a small, three-acre plot of undeveloped woodland located at the highest point of the Blue Ridge Mountains, completely overlooked during the 2026 federal liquidation because it had been erroneously filed under an obsolete tax identification number.
Claire flew down to Richmond to personally claim the deed. Once the legal title was cleared and transferred to the foundation, she drove out to locate the property.
It was a breathtaking piece of land. Standing at the peak, surrounded by ancient oak trees, you could see the entire valley below, the blue mist of the mountains stretching out into an endless horizon.
As Claire walked through the tall grass, her boot struck a rusted piece of iron buried in the soil. She knelt, clearing the dirt to reveal an old surveyor's stake. Tied to it with rotted copper wire was a small, sealed glass jar.

Inside the jar was a piece of yellowed paper. It was a note written by a young Robert Davis, decades before greed corrupted his soul: “This is the peak. One day, when the business is secure, I will bring Claire and Sabrina here. We will build a house above the clouds, where no one can ever look down on us.”
Claire held the jar, looking out at the massive sky. The tragedy was finally clear. Robert had spent his entire life running from the fear of being looked down on, and in that frantic, terrified race, he had destroyed the very children he wanted to lift above the clouds.
