Chapter 117: The Virginia Solitude

The autumn of 2085 was long and warm, the Virginia hills a brilliant canopy of red and gold. Claire spent fewer weeks in New York, choosing to manage the global trust from the quiet sanctuary of the old family home.

The house had become a place of deep, historic stillness. The framed bounced check from 2026 still hung in the main corridor, its bright red DECLINED stamp a stark reminder of the catalyst that had reshaped our lineage.

One afternoon, young Claire—now an eighteen-year-old freshman at the New York Design Institute—walked into the study, holding an old leather-bound photo album she had found in the attic.

"Look at this, Mom," she said, sitting on the rug next to Claire’s chair.

The photograph was from Friday night, October 10th, 2026—the exact dinner party before the theft was discovered. There was Robert, looking smug and successful at the head of the table; Janet, dripping in fake silver jewelry; and Sabrina, laughing with a glass of wine while Carter stood awkwardly in the background. And there, at the edge of the frame, sat my mother, Claire, looking completely calm, her eyes fixed on her spreadsheet.

"They looked so powerful in this picture," young Claire muttered, tracing the old glossy paper.

"They looked powerful because they were living on credit, sweetie," Claire explained gently, looking at the faces of the dead. "They were spending money they hadn't earned, using guilt they hadn't justified, to maintain an illusion that was already rotting. Your great-grandmother was the only real person at that table. And that’s why she’s the only one whose name is still spoken in the light."
