Chapter 18

Chapter 18: The Aftermath and New Beginnings
Six months later, the dust had finally settled.
Robert had accepted a plea deal, sentencing him to four years in a federal penitentiary. The family warehouse was sold at a public foreclosure auction, and Janet was forced to move into a tiny, run-down one-bedroom apartment, living entirely off a heavily garnished social security check. Sabrina’s husband filed for divorce shortly after her felony conviction, and she was now working a minimum-wage retail job just to afford her apartment.
Carter never went back to college. Last I heard, he was working as a graphic designer for a local printing shop, finally forced to earn his own living without the help of stolen family wealth.
It was a beautiful August morning when I drove Anna to her new campus. It wasn't Carter's ridiculously expensive Ivy League school, but a prestigious, highly respected state university that had accepted her into their honors program.
We carried the final box into her bright, sunny dorm room. Anna looked around, her eyes sparkling with excitement and anticipation for the future.
"Thank you, Mom," she said, hugging me tightly. "For everything. For fighting for me."

"Always, Anna," I whispered, kissing the top of her head. "You are worth every single battle."
As I drove home alone, looking at the open highway ahead of me, the weight of the past year finally disappeared. My family had tried to break us to feed their own arrogance, but in the end, truth, justice, and a mother's fierce love had won the day. I was finally free.
