Chapter 80: The Forgotten Safe

In the spring of 2056, Carter called from Chicago with an unexpected legal puzzle. A commercial bank in downtown Richmond was updating its vault security and had discovered an old, unclaimed safety deposit box registered under the name of Davis Construction LLC, dated exactly forty years prior—long before Robert’s bankruptcy.

Because Carter was the sole surviving male heir who had legally cleared his name, the bank required him or a proxy to authorize the drilling of the lock.

"I don't want to go back to Richmond for a ghost, Aunt Claire," Carter admitted over the phone, his voice deep and weary with the wisdom of his sixty-odd years. "But the bank says if we don't authorize it, the contents will be turned over to the state as unclaimed property. Knowing my grandfather, it could be another ledger of bribes, or it could be nothing."

"I'll handle it, Carter," Anna volunteered, stepping into my study. "Mom is staying comfortable here, and I have a meeting with the Richmond Civic Planning Board next week anyway. Let's see what Robert Davis hid from the feds."

Two days later, Anna stood in the private viewing room of the Richmond bank. A security technician drilled through the ancient brass lock, sliding a heavy, dust-covered steel box onto the table.

When Anna lifted the lid, there were no bundles of hidden cash or records of political corruption. Inside was a single, pristine blueprint from 1982, wrapped in heavy oilskin, and a set of child’s drawing instruments made of brass.

The blueprint wasn't for a commercial warehouse or a high-rise. It was a hand-drawn design for a massive, beautiful family estate, complete with an art studio on the top floor and a large library. In the bottom corner, Robert’s neat, young handwriting read: “The Dream House for Claire and Sabrina. Built by Dad.”
