Chapter 48

Chapter 48: Legacy

The next morning, before my flight back to Virginia, I took a solitary walk along the Brooklyn Heights Promenade. The air was crisp, the harbor wide and open.

My family had tried to build a kingdom on a foundation of sand, lies, and generational sacrifice. They believed that the older generation had the right to consume the younger one, that the golden child deserved the meat while the rest settled for the bones.

But the law had broken their house, the state had taken their assets, and time had forgotten their names. Robert, Janet, and the old Davis Construction were gone. Sabrina was a ghost in a cleaning uniform, trapped in a reality she created for herself.

I looked at my watch. It was time to head to the airport, to return to my quiet, beautiful home in Virginia, where the gardens were blooming and the security screen was always unlocked. I didn't need to look back anymore. The ambush was over. The wolves were gone. The horizon was wide, clear, and completely ours.
