Chapter 81: The Anatomy of a Pivot

Anna brought the oilskin packet back to my house. We spread the old blueprint across the kitchen island, tracing the faded white lines with our fingers.

"He intended to build this for us," I said softly, a strange, distant memory flickering in my mind. I remembered being seven years old, sitting on a pile of bricks at a construction site, while my father handed me a wooden ruler and told me I was going to design castles one day.

"What happened to that man, Mom?" Anna asked, her voice filled with a quiet reverence for the father I had lost long before I put him in prison.

"The market crashed in the late eighties," I explained, staring at the blueprint. "Robert nearly lost everything. He took a loan from a group of local developers who operated in the shadows. To pay them back, he had to cut corners, falsify safety records, and pay off inspectors. Once you cross that line to survive, your dream doesn't belong to you anymore. It belongs to the people who own your secrets."

The tragedy of Robert Davis wasn't that he was born evil; it was that he lacked the courage to fail honestly. He chose to become a wolf because he was terrified of being a lamb, and in doing so, he turned his own family into a pack of scavengers.

"Let's keep the drawing instruments for young Claire," Anna said, closing the box. "But the blueprint stays here. It’s a reminder that every grand design begins with a single choice of material."
