Chapter 32: The Face of Defeat

I climbed out of the sedan, pulling my coat tight against the London chill. I walked down the pavement, my boots clicking softly against the wet stones. Sabrina didn't notice me until I stopped directly in front of her table, blocking her view of the school.

She looked up, her eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated terror. "Claire?"

"Hello, Sabrina," I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion.

She scrambled backward, nearly knocking her chair over. "How... how did you find me? Did Anna tell you? You're stalking me! You're obsessed with destroying me!"

"You crossed an ocean to stalk my daughter, Sabrina," I replied, leaning against the iron railing. "You violated your probation. You lied on your visa application. You thought you could hide in a city of nine million people, but you forgot that your greed leaves a paper trail everywhere you go."

"Please, Claire," she suddenly broke down, dropping her face into her hands, weeping loudly. Several British pedestrians turned to look, but I didn't care. "I have nothing left. They took my apartment. I’m sleeping in a room with twelve strangers. I just wanted Anna to sign a waiver saying she forgives the debt so the judge will lift my probation restriction. If I go back to America, they’re going to lock me up!"

"Then you should get used to small spaces," I said coldly.

Just then, two neatly dressed men in dark suits approached the table, accompanied by two uniformed officers from the Metropolitan Police.

"Sabrina Davis?" the lead officer asked, pulling out a laminated document. "You are being detained under the Immigration Act for providing fraudulent information on your entry declaration, pursuant to an international warrant issued by the United States."

As the officers pulled her hands behind her back and snapped the handcuffs into place, Sabrina screamed my name, her voice echoing through the rainy London streets. She looked at me with a hatred so pure it could have cut glass. But as the police car pulled away, all I felt was a profound sense of relief. The last loose thread of the Davis family had finally been pulled.
