Chapter 88: The Final Return to the Porch

By 2062, Anna had moved permanently back into my old house in Virginia. She had restored the gardens to their original beauty, the white roses blooming thick and wild along the stone wall.

The house was no longer a place of conflict; it was a museum of a family’s redemption. The framed bounced check from 2026 hung in the main hallway, a strange, historic artifact that young Claire’s friends would look at with curiosity, unable to comprehend a world where family members would rob a child’s education.

On a warm July evening, Carter drove down from Chicago. He was seventy now, his hair completely white, but his eyes were bright with the satisfaction of a life well-lived. He sat on the porch steps next to Anna, a bottle of wine between them.

"Do you remember the night the SUV pulled in, Carter?" Anna asked, looking out at the quiet driveway.

"I do," Carter nodded, a faint, melancholic smile touching his lips. "I was sitting in the back of that car, crying because campus security had made me pack my life into garbage bags. I thought my life was ruined. I thought Aunt Claire was a monster."

"She was a monster to the wolves, Carter," Anna said softly, pouring him a glass of wine. "But she was the only real family we ever had."

"To Claire," Carter raised his glass to the endless sky.

"To Claire," Anna echoed.
