Chapter 13

Chapter 13: The Fire Sale

With their bank accounts frozen and a federal investigation looming, my family’s luxurious lifestyle began to unravel at a terrifying speed. By Friday afternoon, a mutual family friend texted me a link to a local online auction site.

Robert was holding an emergency liquidation sale of his business assets. The commercial vans, the heavy machinery, the high-end tools—everything was being sold off at rock-bottom prices in a desperate attempt to raise cash.

Curiosity got the better of me, and I drove past Robert’s warehouse on my way home. The scene was chaotic. Several repo trucks were parked outside, and men in uniforms were attaching hitch locks to two of the newer company vans. Robert was standing in the gravel lot, arguing furiously with a man holding a clipboard, his hands gesturing wildly. He looked ten years older, his expensive tailored shirt stained with sweat and dirt.

Just as I was about to pull away, Sabrina’s car pulled into the lot. She jumped out, ignoring her father, and ran toward a group of people who were inspecting some office furniture.

"Get away from that!" she screamed at a potential buyer. "That’s my desk! You can't buy that!"

"Everything is up for liquidation, lady," the buyer replied, shoving past her.

I watched as Sabrina broke down, crying on the hood of her car. She had built her entire identity on being the successful, wealthy daughter of a prosperous businessman, while looking down on me for being a single mother who worked a corporate job. Now, the illusion was completely shattered. They were being stripped bare, piece by piece, by the very system they thought they could outsmart.
