Chapter 73

Chapter 73: The Final Settlement of Accounts
In the spring of 2049, Marcus Thorne passed away peacefully at his home in Virginia at the age of eighty-eight. He left behind a legendary legal reputation, but to me, he would always be the man who sat across from me in that dark office in 2026 and said, “Let’s go to war.”
I attended his funeral in Richmond. It was a grand, somber affair attended by judges, politicians, and legal titans from across the country. Elena Thorne stood by the casket, greeting the mourners.
When she saw me approach, she paused, her face softening into a genuine, respectful expression. She stepped away from the crowd, meeting me near the stone archway of the chapel.
"Claire," Elena said softly, reaching out to take my hand. "Thank you for coming. My father always kept a file on his desk containing the final closure document from your case. Even in his last weeks, when his mind was wandering, he’d point to it and tell his assistants, 'That’s how you balance a ledger of justice.'"
"Your father saved my daughter’s future, Elena," I said honestly. "He was more of a protector to us than my own blood ever was."

"He loved you guys," Elena smiled, a tear slipping down her cheek. "And he was proud of how you handled Vanguard. He told me after that meeting that if I ever wanted to be a real lawyer, I needed to learn how to recognize a client who has truth on her side."
As I walked out of the chapel into the quiet churchyard, I felt a deep, peaceful sense of closure. The old guard was passing, but the justice they had helped us forge was carved into the very fabric of our lives.
