Chapter 93

Chapter 93: The Unbroken Thread
The burial of Anna Davis was held at the small churchyard outside Richmond, right next to the plot where I lay, and just a few yards from the quiet space Carter had built for Sabrina. The family was finally gathered in the same soil, but the hierarchy had been completely inverted.
The wolves had been buried in silence, while the protectors were surrounded by a fortress of living love.
Carter stood by the grave, his shoulders stooped with age, leaning on his granddaughter’s arm. "They tried to break us, Claire," he whispered to the young woman. "They really did. My mom, my grandparents... they thought they could use us as currency for their own vanity."

"They failed, Grandfather," Claire said firmly, her voice carrying the exact same cadence I had used on my porch sixty years prior. "They failed because Great-Aunt Claire refused to let them have the final word. And I promise you, as long as I have breath, the word they left behind will always be truth."
As the white roses were lowered onto the casket, a soft winter breeze swept through the churchyard, scattering the petals across the snow. The thread was unbroken. The legacy was secure.
