Chapter 43: The Last Stand of Robert’s Legacy

In late 2032, the final piece of the Davis family history came up for demolition. The old warehouse that had housed Davis Construction for thirty years—the building Robert had used to hide his bribes, his illegal ledgers, and his pride—was purchased by the city through a tax foreclosure sale.

It was scheduled to be leveled to make room for a public park.

I drove down to the industrial district on the morning of the demolition. I parked my car across the street, watching as a massive yellow excavator with a iron claw positioned itself in front of the rusted metal gates.

A small crowd of local residents had gathered to watch. To them, it was just an old eye-sore being removed. To me, it was the final monument of my childhood trauma being erased from the earth.

As the excavator’s claw slammed through the roof, sending a cloud of gray dust and broken timber into the air, a car pulled up behind mine. I looked in my rearview mirror.

It was Carter. He had driven down from Chicago. He didn't get out of his car; he just rolled down his window, catching my eye. He offered a simple, solemn nod. He had spent his early years being told this building would one day be his empire. Now, he was watching it turn into gravel, and he looked completely at peace with it.
