Chapter 30

Chapter 30: Tracking the Fugitive
Within ten minutes of hanging up with Anna, I was on a conference call with Marcus Thorne and a private investigator he retained in the UK.
"Sabrina is desperate, Claire," Marcus analyzed, looking over her financial records on his screen. "She’s completely broke in the States. Her credit cards are maxed out, and she’s facing a probation violation for failing to make her monthly restitution payments to Anna. Running to London wasn't just about confronting Anna—it was a flight to avoid prison."
"Can the British authorities arrest her?" I asked.
"Not automatically for an American probation violation," Marcus explained. "But tracking her is easy. She has no money for hotels. She’s likely staying in a cheap hostel or couch-surfing."

The investigator, a sharp-voiced man named Alastair, chimed in. "We’ve already flagged her passport with the airport authorities. If she tries to board a flight out, we'll know. In the meantime, I have two operators watching your daughter’s campus and her dormitory. Sabrina won't get within fifty yards of her again."
That evening, I couldn't sleep. I sat in my quiet house, staring at the empty living room. Sabrina’s obsession with our money had turned into a literal madness. She had destroyed her own life, and now she was spending her final resources trying to drag Anna down with her. But I wasn't the passive sister anymore. If Sabrina wanted to play international fugitive, I was going to make sure her landing was incredibly hard.
