Chapter 39

Chapter 39: The Manhattan Baseline

New York City had a rhythm that didn't care about your past. By the winter of 2031, Anna had fully integrated into her role at the Brooklyn design firm. She had her own apartment, a small but sunlit studio in Greenpoint, and her work was already being noticed by senior partners.

I remained in Virginia, enjoying the quiet luxury of a peaceful life. My corporate job was stable, my house was a sanctuary, and the name "Davis" had finally stopped appearing in local legal notices.

On a cold Friday night, I was adjusting the thermostat when my phone chimed. It was an alert from a legal monitoring service Marcus Thorne had set up years ago.

Notification: Inmate Sabrina Davis (ID: #88492-VA) has been approved for scheduled release on parole, effective December 1st, 2031.

I stood in the hallway, the phone glowing in my hand. Three years. It had felt like a lifetime while we fought her in the courts, but time moves in a straight line for the innocent and loops in circles for the guilty. Sabrina was coming out. She had no money, no home, no husband, and no parents left to enable her.

I didn't panic. I didn't call Marcus in a frenzy. I simply went to the kitchen, poured myself a glass of wine, and sat down. Sabrina was a broken clock with no hands left to move. She couldn't hurt us anymore.
