Chapter 86: The Reclaimed Ledger

By the summer of 2059, Anna had reached her eightieth year. She decided to officially dissolve the corporate entity of Anna Davis Design Studios, transferring all remaining patents, physical properties, and digital archives directly to a public trust managed by young Claire and the foundation.

As she was closing out the final bank accounts, an automated notification from the Virginia State Treasury appeared on her screen.

It was an escheatment notice. A residual sum of seven hundred and twelve dollars had been recovered from an old, forgotten administrative escrow account linked to Sabrina’s final parole integration file from 2031. Per the state guidelines, because the primary creditor was deceased, the funds were to be distributed to the surviving next of kin.

Anna looked at the notice for a long time. Seventy thousand dollars had turned into a decades-long war, and now, the absolute final drop of that stolen pool had returned to her hand as a tiny, three-digit check from the state treasury.

She didn't deposit it into her firm's account. She didn't use it for charity. She drove out to the public cemetery outside Richmond, walked down the narrow gravel path to the simple, quiet plot Carter had purchased for Sabrina years ago, and sat down on the stone bench.

"It’s over, Sabrina," Anna whispered to the quiet grass. "The last cent has been accounted for. The ledger is officially zero." She placed the check under a small stone on the headstone, leaving it for the wind to carry away. The debt was no longer financial; it had been entirely settled by time.
