Chapter 71

Chapter 71: The Archive of Restitution
In the summer of 2047, Anna’s firm celebrated its fifteenth anniversary. As part of the milestone, her corporate archivist compiled a beautiful, leather-bound digital ledger detailing every project, every scholarship foundation, and every civic donation the studio had ever completed.
On the very last page of the ledger, under a section titled “Special Endowments,” was a line item that caught my eye.
The Claire Davis Educational Trust for Independent Young Women: $5,000,000 permanently funded.
I looked up from the screen, my eyes finding Anna, who was sitting at her desk across the room, reviewing structural drafts for a new library in Boston. "Anna... what is this?"
She walked over, leaning against the edge of my chair. "It’s a permanent scholarship pool, Mom. Every year, ten single mothers or daughters of single mothers will receive a full, four-year ride to any university of their choice, completely independent of family financial approval. I wanted it named after you."
My throat tightened, happy tears blurring my vision. "Anna... you didn't have to do that."
May you like
"Yes, I did," she said softly, kissing the top of my head. "The Davis family used money as a leash to control people and a weapon to steal futures. You broke the leash, Mom. This trust ensures that your name will always mean freedom for girls who need someone to fight for them."
Sitting in that bright, high-rise office, looking at the legacy we had constructed out of the ashes of a bounced check, I knew that our victory was complete. We hadn't just saved ourselves; we had built a fortress that would protect thousands of others.
