Chapter 62

Chapter 62: The Boardroom Chess Match
The preliminary city council hearing for the Hudson Pavilion was held in May 2042. The grand council chamber at New York City Hall was packed with journalists, urban planners, and corporate executives. Anna and her design team sat on the left side of the aisle; Elena Thorne and the Vanguard executives sat on the right.
Elena Thorne looked remarkably like her father—sharp gray eyes, impeccable tailoring, and an aura of absolute command. Before the session began, she walked across the aisle, stopping at Anna’s table.
"Anna," Elena nodded politely, her voice smooth like silk. "Your design is beautiful. Truly. But Vanguard has the institutional weight. We have the political backing. This city doesn't build hundred-million-dollar landmarks with independent boutique studios."
Anna didn't flinch. She stood up, matching Elena’s height perfectly. "Your father taught me that weight doesn't matter if the foundation is corrupt, Elena. Vanguard is currently under investigation for environmental compliance issues in New Jersey. Did you think we wouldn't read the public filings before coming to this table?"
Elena’s eyes narrowed slightly, a microscopic crack appearing in her professional armor. "That matter was settled out of court, Anna."

"It was settled with a fine, not a correction," Anna countered, leaning forward. "My design is entirely carbon-neutral and independently funded. The city council cares about public legacy, not corporate shortcuts. Let's let the board decide."
As Elena walked back to her side of the room, I watched from the gallery, a deep sense of pride warming my chest. The little girl who had almost been robbed of her college education was now trading legal blows with a top-tier Manhattan corporate lawyer without missing a single beat.
