Chapter 66: The Architecture of Victory

In October 2042, the New York City Council officially announced the winner of the Hudson River Environmental and Arts Pavilion contract.

Anna Davis Design Studios.

The celebration at the Brooklyn brownstone was legendary. Young architects, local artists, and city officials packed the space, Toasting to a historic win for independent design. Carter flew in from Chicago, bringing a stunning, custom-carved marble sign for the entrance of the new pavilion, which read simply: Built on Truth.

As the party raged downstairs, Anna and I walked out onto the second-floor balcony, looking out at the glittering lights of the Manhattan skyline across the dark water.

"We did it, Mom," Anna whispered, clinking her glass against mine. "The biggest project in the city. My design is going to be carved into the stone of New York forever."

"You earned every single inch of that stone, Anna," I said, wrapping an arm around her shoulder.

"I kept thinking about Grandma Janet tonight," Anna admitted, looking at the distant stars. "I kept remembering how she used to look at me like I was an obstacle to Carter’s future. If she could see this room... if she could see that Carter is my partner and that Vanguard surrendered to us..."

"Janet’s world was tiny, Anna," I told her. "She could only see as far as her own vanity. You built a world that is infinite. Let her memory stay in the dirt where it belongs."
