Chapter 15

Chapter 15: Sabrina’s Desperation
That evening, as I was cooking dinner, someone began banging violently on my front door. It wasn't the aggressive, confident knock of Robert or Janet. It sounded weak, erratic, and frantic.
I checked the security camera. It was Sabrina, alone. She wasn't wearing her usual designer clothes; she was in sweatpants, her hair messy, looking completely broken.
I opened the wooden door but kept the security screen locked. "What do you want, Sabrina?"
"Claire, please," she sobbed, dropping to her knees on my porch. "You have to drop the lawsuit. Please. They’re going to arrest Dad. The IRS agents were at the house today. They’re taking everything. We can't even pay our rent."
"You should have thought about that before you helped them rob Anna," I said coldly, looking down at her.
"I didn't know!" she lied, her voice cracking. "They told me it was a gift! They told me you agreed to it! Please, Claire, Carter is sleeping on a friend's floor. His life is ruined. If Dad goes to jail, we lose everything."
"Stop lying, Sabrina," I said, my voice cutting through her tears like ice. "I have the text messages from Friday night where you bragged about taking the money. I have the security footage of you telling me Anna didn't deserve it. You knew exactly what you were doing. You were greedy, and you thought I was too weak to fight back."

She looked up at me, her eyes filling with a sudden, vicious hatred. "You're a monster. You're destroying your own family over money!"
"No," I corrected her. "I am protecting my daughter from a pack of wolves who happen to share my DNA. Goodbye, Sabrina." I shut the door, ignoring her screams as she pounded on the glass.
