I stared at the paper. Ten years. It had taken exactly ten years from the morning Sabrina marched into that university bursar's office with a stolen cashier's check for the ledger to be completely balanced. Every single cent they had taken, every dollar of interest, every legal penalty had been extracted from her, hour by hour, toilet by toilet, paycheck by paycheck.
I scanned the document and sent it to Anna.
Her reply came back five minutes later with a photo. She was standing in a bright, modern studio space in Manhattan—she had just signed the lease on her own independent design consulting firm.
