Chapter 91

Chapter 91: The Silent River
The winter of 2066 was the coldest Virginia had seen in a generation. The fields were covered in a deep, crystalline ice, and the trees stood like silver sculptures against the pale blue sky.
Anna, now eighty-six, spent most of her days in the warm sunroom I had designed for her. Her health was failing gently, her body slowing down to match the quiet rhythm of the winter earth.
Young Claire had taken a leave of absence from her New York firm to stay with her, filling the old house with the comforting aroma of hot tea, wood smoke, and classical music.
One afternoon, while looking out at the frozen river down the valley, Anna reached out to touch Claire’s hand. "Claire... do you have the silver pen?"
Claire pulled the old fountain pen from her blazer pocket—the one Carter had given Anna for graduation in 2030. "Right here, Aunt Anna."
"Use it to sign the final authorization for the Richmond park extension tomorrow," Anna whispered, her eyes bright with a calm, clear lucidity. "Let them build the children's library where the old gate used to be. Let the children have the space."
May you like
"I will, Anna," Claire promised, kissing her forehead. "I’ll sign it tomorrow morning."
Anna smiled, leaning her head back against the velvet pillow. She looked entirely content, a woman who had run her race, protected her blood, and left the world completely reinforced against the dark.
