Chapter 12: The Workplace Confrontation
The next morning, I had to face the music at work. My HR director, a sharp, no-nonsense woman named Elena, called me into her office at 9:00 AM. The atmosphere was tense as I sat down across from her.
"Claire, I received a very disturbing letter from a Janet Davis claiming to be your mother," Elena began, sliding the printed document across the table. "She makes some heavy allegations about extortion and financial misconduct."
"Elena, I appreciate you bringing this to my attention," I said, keeping my voice steady. I pulled out a manila folder from my briefcase and placed it on her desk. "This is a certified copy of the federal injunction and the police report filed against Janet and Robert Davis for the theft of seventy thousand dollars from my daughter’s educational trust. My attorney is Marcus Thorne."
Elena blinked, surprised by my preparedness. She picked up the police report, skimming through the details.
"They forged my signature to drain an account," I continued. "When I discovered the theft and involved the authorities, they threatened to ruin my career if I didn't drop the charges. That letter you are holding is a direct attempt to blackmail me into compliance."

Elena read the police report, then looked back at my mother’s letter. Her expression softened from professional suspicion to utter disgust. "This is horrifying, Claire. I’m so sorry you’re going through this. Rest assured, the company will not be used as a weapon in your family’s criminal disputes. I am forwarding this directly to our legal team to draft a cease-and-desist letter to Mrs. Davis. Your job is perfectly secure."
As I left her office, I felt a weight lift from my shoulders. Janet’s petty, malicious tactics had completely backfired. She thought the world worked on gossip and manipulation, but she was about to learn that the law only cares about evidence.
