Chapter 57

Chapter 57: The Circle Completes
Summer 2040. The terrace of my house in Virginia was cool, shaded by the mature maple trees that lined the property.
Anna and Carter had both flown in for a long weekend to celebrate my sixty-fifth birthday. We sat around a large wooden table, enjoying a dinner of fresh salmon, white wine, and laughter. Carter was showing Anna sketches for a new museum project in Europe, while Anna recounted her recent trip to London as a visiting professor at her old university.
"Mom," Anna said, leaning over to clink her wine glass against mine. "You're looking exceptionally relaxed lately. Retirement suits you."
"It’s easy to relax when the world is in good hands," I smiled, looking at her and Carter.
"We were talking about the old house the other day," Carter said, taking a sip of his wine. "The old Friday night dinner parties before... everything. It feels like a movie we watched a long time ago. It doesn't even feel real anymore."

"It was real," I said softly, looking at the golden evening light filtering through the trees. "But it was just the prologue. The real story started the moment we decided that we didn't have to carry their darkness into our future."
Anna reached across the table, holding my hand tightly. "You taught us how to build a real family, Mom. One based on respect, love, and protection. That’s the legacy that matters."
