Chapter 21: Sabrina’s Rebrand
While Janet was decaying in poverty, Sabrina was trying a different tactic: reinvention.
A coworker of mine, who knew vaguely about my family drama, pulled me aside during lunch break and showed me her phone. "Claire, isn't this your sister?"
On the screen was a TikTok video. Sabrina was sitting in front of a ring light, wearing flattering makeup, looking tearful but heavily filtered. The caption read: #SurvivingNarcissists #FamilyBetrayal #HealingJourney.
I pressed play.
"...and so, my own sister used a minor financial misunderstanding to put our elderly father in prison and alienate my son from his education," Sabrina sobbed softly to the camera, her voice perfectly modulated. "She completely cut us off because she wanted all of our parents' estate for herself. I lost my marriage, my home, and my dignity. But I'm standing strong. I'm starting a coaching business for women who have been financially abused by their families."
I stared at the screen, momentarily speechless. The audacity was almost impressive. She had flipped the narrative entirely, turning her felony conviction into a badge of victimhood to grift money from unsuspecting internet strangers. The comments were filled with supportive messages: “Stay strong sis!” “Your sister sounds like a demon!”

"Should we report it?" my coworker asked, looking worried.
"No," I smiled, a cold feeling settling in my chest. "Let her build an audience. The bigger her platform, the funnier it will be when the truth catches up to her."
